Favorite Layout for Expository OT Studies Using Logos 4

Here is a demonstration of my layout for OT studies using Logos 4. It is similar to the NT layout, so you should view that video first as I do not cover the basic layout in this video in depth. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Logos Bible Software 4 Reading Layout

Below is a demonstration of how I setup Logos Bible Software 4 for reading. There is a reading view in L4, but I find this layout preferable.

Logos 4 vs Logos 3 Pt 1

Let me start by saying that I really enjoy using Logos 4. However, as noted in the forums, there have been some requests (complaints) by Logos 3 customers about not being able to do things as efficiently in Logos 4.

Logos 3 developed into a very flexible, but complex program. They introduced the two different resource associations, added many new fields to keylinking, etc as the program developed. This allowed users to develop their own style. Sometimes it was the best way, sometimes it was not, but it was their own way.

The problem with this is that new users felt like they were taking a drink from a fire hose when they started using the program. As a power user I needed to consider this: If I lost all my keylinking setups, workspace layouts, resource associations and collection from Logos 3, would I rather start the setup process over in Logos 3 or Logos 4. My answer is Logos 4. I always backed up my Logos 3 setup and preferences because losing them meant way too much work to get them set up again. That said, many users have them setup and want to keep them in Logos 4... fair enough.. a balance I am certain will be found.

This video compares how I start my reading in an expository study using Logos 3 and now Logos 4. It highlights some of the vast improvements of Logos 4 and at the same time shows some inefficiencies created with the updated software.

I realize this is a sensitive subject and have tried to walk a line of balance and objectivity providing the benefit of the doubt to all parties involved. If I failed in this, please accept my apology in advance and feel free to comment below.

Logos 4 Search Layout

This is a brief video demonstrating how to use Logos Bible Software 4 to set up a search based layout. I actually build the layout to demonstrate better how to both create and use Logos 4 for search based studies.

As always, comments welcome.

Bible Software... It's all good!

Briefly my history using Bible study software:
Way back in the time of 51/2 inch floppies... yes way back, I pickup Online Bible Software. I installed the DOS version on my IBM PC and became amazed at how bible study and computers worked.

Next Windows and QuickVerse 2.0, PC Study Bible 2.0, Wordsearch 3.0.. STEP and my first website: The Unofficial STEP Newsletter. After about 6 months I was contacted by Dale Pritchett of Logos Bible Software to see if I would review Logos 2.0 for Windows. I did and became a Logos user.

QuickVerse sold and STEP died. I transferred all my STEP resources to WordSearch, which I continue to use today Version 9(beta). Gave my PC Study Bible to my parents and became interested in original languages... Purchased Bible Works 3.5...Logos went to Libronix.. BibleWorks went from 4 to 8... bought a Mac.. Accordance 6 then 7, then 8... then Logos 4.

That's my history with bible software and I don't regret a single purchase or experience. With that said, let's talk about objectivity. I am a CPA by profession and we are trained to be objective. However, it is not possible to be completely objective. I enjoy using some software for how I study the Bible better than others. Perhaps I know the program better and am comfortable with the using it. As much as I try, I am not fully objective. Also, in the process of reviewing the above software over the years, I have gotten to know great people at each of the above companies. I am sensitive to how comments about software are perceived by the creators of such.

With that said, I can conclusively state that we are most blessed with the current lineup of available software, both free and commercial. It is all GOOD. Some packages fit some people better. Here are my recommendations as of November 25, 2009:

Mac: Accordance. It is the only full-featured, completed Mac package that I would recommend at this time.
PC: Original language only: BibleWorks. If you are planning on having your library in paper, but want to use the computer for original language work, then this is the program I recommend. It is a great value.
PC: English only: WordSearch. It is easy to use, expandable and suited for those that have no interest in the advanced original language features. They are including more lexicons and interlinears, however, they are still a primarily English based program.
PC: Library with a desire or experience with original Languages: Logos 4. Hands down this is the program for those that want an extensive electronic library and want to get into the original languages or know the original languages.

The bottom line (being a CPA I like the term) It's all good.

Logos 4 Prepositional Use

I read on the Logos Bible Software Forums a few asking about the Prepositions Use feature found in the Bible Word Study Report in Logos 4. Here is a brief video explaining the feature as well as providing sources for further study.
